Professor Wayne W. Zhang Delivers Keynote Speech at Prestigious Taheri Memorial Lectureship
Date:2026-04-22

Recently, Professor Wayne W. Zhang, Distinguished Investigator and Director of Independent Cardiovascular Research Lab at Chinese Institutes for Medical Research (CIMR), Beijing, Chair Professor and Chair of the Department of Vascular Surgery at Capital Medical University, and Chief Expert in Vascular Surgery at Beijing Anzhen Hospital, was invited to deliver a keynote speech at the highly esteemed Taheri Memorial Lectureship. This honor marks international recognition of Professor Zhang's outstanding academic achievements and clinical contributions in the field of vascular surgery.

Top Lecture Series: Honoring Pioneers, Showcasing Excellence
The Taheri Memorial Lectureship is established in memory of Syed A. Taheri, a pioneer in vascular surgery and the inventor of the first-generation aortic Talent stent. Each year, only one globally renowned scholar is selected to deliver a keynote speech, making it a top-tier academic platform. Previous speakers include:

Juan C. Parodi, the father of endovascular minimally invasive treatment and a Nobel Prize nominee in Physiology or Medicine;
Frank J. Veith, a global titan in vascular surgery, founder and chair of the VEITH International Vascular Symposium, and a pioneer in limb salvage;
Elliot Chaikof, Chair of the Endovascular Treatment Standards Committee, Johnson & Johnson Professor at Harvard Medical School, and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Harvard BIDMC.

Professor Zhang is the first Chinese scholar to be invited to this prestigious forum, highlighting both his personal academic achievements and the growing global influence of Chinese vascular surgery research.

Clinically Driven Innovation: Solving Global Challenges in Aortic Minimally Invasive Treatment

In his keynote speech titled "Clinically Driven Innovation in Endovascular Minimally Invasive Devices", Professor Zhang presented groundbreaking advancements by his team in the field of vascular surgery:

· ZIPPER Aortic Arch Integrated Three-Branch Stent Graft System: This system has been hailed by international peers as a breakthrough in solving the challenges of total endovascular repair for complex aortic arch lesions, enabling complete percutaneous femoral artery access for minimally invasive treatment [1,2].
· One-Stop Anti-Endoleak Endovascular Aortic Repair (EVAR) Stent Graft System: This innovative system provides a new approach and solution to the globally recognized clinical challenge of Type II endoleaks after EVAR, earning the 2025 Frank J. Veith International Innovation Award [3].

Academic Legacy: From Chinese Practice to Global Impact
Professor Zhang has long been dedicated to advancing vascular surgical innovation and fostering international collaboration. During his speech, he engaged in deep exchanges with fellow experts, sharing knowledge and insights, and honoring the legacy of pioneers while promoting the development of the field through dialogue.

"Passing the torch, we continue to move forward," said Professor Zhang. "We will continue to focus on cardiovascular diseases, driving high-level international academic cooperation to bring Chinese vascular surgery to the forefront of global excellence and provide better diagnostic and therapeutic solutions for patients worldwide."
